Erie County History
Erie County was created by an act of the Ohio Legislature on April 1, 1838. It was formed from parts of Huron and Sandusky counties and was named for the Erie, a tribe of Native Americans who lived along the south shore of Lake Erie. In 1840, it gained another small portion from Huron County and lost a portion due to the creation of Ottawa County. In 1845, it gained Kelleys Island from Ottawa County. Including Kelleys Island, it is the smallest of Ohio’s 88 counties in land area – 252 square miles. The total legal size of the county is 626 square miles, which includes 374 square miles of Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay.
