About Our Chapter
In 1970, the Kinologists was formed as a special interest committee of the Firelands Historical Society. In 1976, the group was officially designated as the Huron County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. In October, 2022, the chapter adopted the trade name Firelands Genealogical Society in an effort to serve a region that was previously covered by the now defunct Erie County Chapter of OGS.

The chapter is dedicated to furthering quality genealogical and family history research in the Firelands -- especially Huron County and Erie County, Ohio. To achieve this goal, the chapter concentrates on education and records preservation.

The chapter...
  • offers occasional genealogy classes for both the beginning and intermediate researcher
  • advises county 4-H members on genealogical projects for the Huron County Fair.
  • sponsors special workshops and lectures
  • provides a variety of speakers and programs at monthly meetings
  • organizes library research trips
  • purchases local history items for area research libraries, especially the Norwalk Public Library and the Firelands Historical Research Center

In addition, members are willing to share their knowledge and to assist other members with difficult problems or stumbling blocks.

Among the various other research tools offered by the chapter are...
  • The Kinologist, a quarterly newsletter, which contains chapter news, research extractions, articles of local interest, queries, and more
  • Our Ancestor File, which contains surname cards and pedigree charts.
