LAMBERT SCHAEFER SR., son of Johan Henrich Schaefer and Anna Eva Sternberg, was born 11 February 1753, at Schoharie (now Cobleskill), Albany (now Schoharie) County, New York. 1* He was christened Lambert Schafer, [-] February 1753, at Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in what is now Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York. His parents were listed as Henrich Schafer Jr. and Eva [Sternberg], and the sponsors were Lambert Sternberg and wife. 2* It is believed he died after the 1840 census, in which it appears he may be living with his son Lambert Jr., in Florence, Erie County, Ohio. 3* However, the last positive proof of him still living is an affidavit filed by him on 23 February 1833. 4* He is buried about two miles south of Birmingham, Erie County, Ohio, in Florence Township on the bank of the Vermilion River, 5* in the Shafer Cemetery.
Lambert Schaffer married SARA FREYMEYER on 8 October 1775 at the Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schoharie, Albany (now Schoharie) County, New York. 6* Sara was born 17 November 1756, in Albany (now Schoharie) County, New York, and was christened Sara Freymauer on 12 December 1756, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with her parents named as Johannes FREYMAUER and Anna [MATTICE]. 7* Sara died before 29 June 1822, when Lambert's wife is named as Mary Shafer. It is uncertain if Sara died in New York or made the trip to Ohio with Lambert.
Lambert married secondly Mary [surname unknown], before 29 June 1822, when she is named in a life lease with him. No marriage record has yet been found for his marriage to Mary. The 1830 census indicates that Mary was between 50-59 years of age, making her birth between 1771-1780.
In the affidavit written 27 July 1832, at Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio, when Lambert applied for benefits under the act of Congress passed 7 June 1832, he stated that he entered the Continental army in 1775 as a private for nine months into a company commanded by Captain Christian Braun or Brown, in a Regiment commanded by Colonel Peter Vrooman. He first served at Fort Stanwix and from there he went to and served at Fort Edward and from thence he went to Lake Champlain. At the end of the said nine months, he was honorably discharged, the discharge of which was lost. Lambert then served in the Militia of the State of New York, commanded by Captain Brown and Colonel Vrooman, from 1776 to the time of peace in 1783. He signed his name to this affidavit as Lambert Schaefer. 8* The local militia commanded by Col. Vrooman was the 15th Regiment of Albany County Militia. This regiment was responsible for defending the Schoharie Valley. It is very likely that Lambert was with the militia at the Middle Fort in Middleburgh during the invasion of 1780 by Sir John Johnson. 9*
The 1790 to 1810 censuses find Lambert living in what is now Cobleskill, Schoharie County, New York. A variety of spellings are used for his name in these census records, including Shaffer, Shaver and Shafer. In his pension papers, Lambert stated that since the Revolutionary War he lived in Coverskill [sic] for between 20-30 years, from thence he went to Madison County, New York, where he lived as much as four years. From thence he moved to Florence, from thence to Eldridge, and from thence to Townsend in the County of Huron, State of Ohio. 10*
Although no deeds have been found for Lambert in Huron or Erie Counties, Ohio, a life lease was recorded. On 29 June 1822, Briant Milliman of Townsend granted a life lease for certain considerations and for the sum of one dollar, for land in Lot No.23, to Lambert Shafer and Mary Shafer, his wife of Townsend. This was one acre in the "southeast of my improvement in the lot No.23 in the second range of the lots in said township and ten acres of land on the south east corner of the same timbered lot likewise ten apple trees and three cherry trees said Shafer and his wife is to have the house he now lives in." This was to be held by Lambert and Mary as long as they lived in said house. 11*
His pension certificate was issued on 22 May 1833, for $80 per annum. This pension act was to commence on 4 March 1831, and so he received two years retroactive for 4 March 1831 to 4 March 1833 of $160.00, plus a half year from 4 March 1833 to 4 September 1833 of $40.00. 12* His date of death was not recorded within these records, but this could indicate that he died around September 1833.
