and
Johannethea “Nettie’ Eberling LBMY-LJY
(9 August 1866-27 January 1933)
(23 October 1839-3 October 1911)
and
Johannethea “Nettie’ Eberling LBMY-LJY
(9 August 1866-27 January 1933)
Nettie’s the daughter of Friedrich Phillip Eberling LBMY-YK6 (1839-1925) and Raharina Heymann LBMY (1834-1908), second marriage was to William Phillip Miller, (LB3T-NCT), on 27 July 1892 in Paulding County, Ohio. William (23 October 1839-3 October 1911) was born in the Nassau, Germany and was 27 years older than Nettie. According to a 1900 U. S. Census William immigrated to America in 1866. I have found one possible matching record for him. A W. Mueller born circa. 1839, aboard the ship Prinz Albert, departing Hamburg, Germany and arriving New York Harbor on 10 February 1866. He was listed as 27 years old an a farmer. (Germans Immigrating to the United States) There were many William Millers that immigrated to America and even though I know the year he came, based on the 1900 census, this may or may not be him. His parents are unknown at this writing.
He married Philippine Schnatz in about 1866-67, most likely in Sandusky County, Ohio as their first two children were born there. By 1875 they had moved to Huron County, Ohio. On the 1880 U. S. Census the family was living in Sherman, Huron, Ohio, just south of Bellevue, Ohio. Their sixth child was christened in Bellevue, Ohio on 5 March 1885. It is possible that the Eberling’ and Miller’ families knew each other while in Huron County. Nettie emigrated to Bellevue in 1882 and the rest of the Eberlings in 1884. There was a large extended German population coming and going from both counties and there certainly could have been common acquaintances as well. Whether these families knew each other in Germany is unknown.
William and Philippine moved to Paulding County, Ohio sometime in 1885. I cannot find any land record for them so I assume they were renting a home/farm, most likely in Benton Township. As previously stated it appears the Eberling family moved to Paulding County sometime around 1887 or so, probably to Benton Township. With no available 1890 census we cannot be exactly sure where either of these families settled. What we do know is that Philippine died in Paulding County, Ohio on 14 January 1887. She was buried in the original section of Lehman Cemetery in Payne, Benton, Paulding, Ohio. (FAG ID#57017999) William was now a single parent with several children still living at home. (Please see my complete narrative of the William and Philippine (Schnatz) Miller Family.)
William and Nettie were married (ML) in Paulding County on 5 August 1892 They combined households and soon had two of their own children. Rosa Matilda (96DJ-SK5) was born on 26 June 1893 and Edith Minnie (L4SJ-CR6) was born on 13 September 1895. Some of William’s children from his first marriage were soon making their own lives and moving out of the household. The 1900 U. S. Census, taken on 21-26 June, shows the family living in the northern half of Benton, Paulding, Ohio and renting a farm. It lists immigration for William as 1866 and Nettie 1882. William P. (60), Mary (34), Dora (16), Oscar (13), Minnie (10), Rosa (6) and Eda (4). It is interesting that Nettie is listed as Mary on this record. A middle or nickname? I have never seen her named listed as Mary on any other document.
My mother, Helen Eilene (Miller) Major remembered Nettie, her grandmother, living in a house that was just slightly west and down a lane to the south, on the same road from where her parents, Sherman and Edith Miller, would eventually purchase a farm. Grantee records in Paulding County, Ohio indicate that Nettie Miller did purchase land on 23 May 1900. (This would have been just prior to the census that year, which was taken where the family was still renting at that time) James M. and Ruth Ann Henry sold Nettie 40 acres of land for $1,350.00. (Grantee Record Book Volume 74 pages 335-336) Nettie later sold this land. This 40 acre tract was located exactly where my mother described. I visited this property in the summer of 2017 and spoke with the owner. He explained that the current house was actually one older house then added on to and now appears as one structure from the outside.
The 1910 U. S. Census for Benton, Paulding, Ohio has William owning a farm and married for 19 years and is naturalized. William (70), Nettie (43) and Edith (14). William died on 3 October 1911 and was buried next to his first wife Philippine. (FAG ID#57018057)
On the 1920 U. S. Census Nettie is living in Benton, Paulding, Ohio with her daughter Rosa and two of her grandchildren. She lists her occupation as a farmer and states she owns a mortgaged home. She and her parents are listed as being born in Hesse, Germany. Nettie (53), Rosa Miller Wirick (26), Clifford A. Wirick (3 5/12) and James O. Wirick (2 2/12).
I have not found Nettie in a census for 1930. Nettie died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Woodburn, Jackson, Allen, Indiana on 27 January 1933, while possibly living with her daughter Rosa. She was buried next to her daughter Minna in Lehman Cemetery Benton, Paulding, Ohio. (FAG ID# 55527120)

Rosie was born 26 June 1893 in Benton, Paulding, Ohio. She can be found on the 1900 census age six, living in the William Phillip Miller Household but curiously, not on the 1910 census. In 1910 she was living in the household of Frank McConnell in Jackson, Allen, Indiana and listed as a servant and seamstress age 16. She married Walter Augusta Wirick in Paulding County, Ohio on 1 December 1915. Walter (L17J-NQ7) was born in Ohio on 15 January 1893, the son of James M. Wirick and Anna Dealey. Rosa and Walter gave birth to two sons, both born in Paulding County, Ohio. Clifford A. Wirick (GMFN-Q28) was born in Ohio on 6 July 1916. Clifford married Margaret Leighner (1918-2012) in Auburn, Dekalb, Indiana on 27 December 1939. They had one daughter, JoAnn Wirick Garman born in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana on 28 April 1948. JoAnn died on 29 January 2010 in Fort Wayne and is buried in Scipio, Allen, Indiana. (FAG ID#100238965) Clifford died in New Haven, Allen, Indiana on 20 March 1975 and was buried in Lehman Cemetery in Payne, Paulding, Ohio. (FAG ID#70945433) His wife Margaret died in New Haven, Allen, Indiana on 17 June 2012 and was buried next to Clifford. (FAG ID#100238906)
Walter and Rosa’s other son was James O. Wirick. (GMFN-D6J) He was born 1 on October 1917 and never married. He died in Allen, Indiana on 1 January 1955. Like the rest of this extended family he was buried in Lehman Cemetery in Payne, Ohio. (FAG ID#56961834)
Walter died unexpectedly on 2 March 1919 in Paulding County, Ohio and was buried in Lehman Cemetery in Benton, Paulding, Ohio. (FAG ID#56961874)
Rosa can be found on the 1920 U. S. Census living with her mother Nettie and two young sons in Benton, Paulding, Ohio. Rosa soon met and married William Franklin King. Frank (L5Z4-Y8X) was born in Payne, Benton, Paulding, Ohio on 28 April 1890, the son of William Allen King and Samatha E. Stabler. “Frank” and “Tillie” were wed on 15 February 1923 in Paulding County, Ohio.
By the 1930 U. S. Census the family had moved to a farm in Jackson, Allen, Indiana. Frank (37), Rosa (36), Clifford (13), James (11) and Paulas (4 5/12). Their son, Paulas Eugene King (L1X7-SB6) was born on 27 November 1925 in Jefferson, Allen, Indiana. He married Beatrice Sarah “Sally” Leland (L1XQ-BKZ) in Allen, Indiana on 26 March 1947. She was the daughter of Dwight and Frances Leland born in Pittsburgh, PA on 6 June 1927. Paulus died in Allen, Indiana on 25 March 1983 and was buried in Lehman Cemetery in Payne, Ohio (FAG ID#57349218) Sally died in Oak Harbor, Washington on 15 November 2005.
By the 1940 U. S. Census the family was in living in Jefferson, Allen, Indiana. Frank (50), Rosa (46) and Paulas E. (14). Also living with them was Clifford A. Wirick (23) and his wife Margaret (nee Leighner) (21) and James O. Wirick (22). Frank, Clifford and James all state they are farmers. They were very likely farming together at this location.
Frank died on 30 May 1951 in Allen County, Indiana and was buried at Lehman Cemetery in Payne, Ohio. (FAG ID#57349493) Rosa lived out her life on the family farm on Webster Road, RR #2, New Haven, Indiana. I remember my family making many trips to Aunt Rosie’s house over the Holidays in the 1950’s and 60’s, she was a special lady. Unfortunately she lived long enough to see both of her husbands and all three of her sons pass before her. She died of a coronary occlusion at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana on 2 April 1983, just 8 days after the death of her youngest son Paulas. She was buried next to Frank and Paulas at Lehman Cemetery in Benton, Paulding, Ohio. (FAG ID#57349535)
