ISAAC STILES and his wife, ELIZABETH CHERRY, came from New Jersey in 1818 and settled in Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, where Isaac bought and sold several plots of land. In 1840, Isaac came to Ripley Township, Huron County, Ohio, to purchase land, and later in that year they moved here.
NICHOLAS D. WELCH, born 1819 in Maryland, came with his mother to Ohio in 1836 settling in Champaign County, Ohio. He married in 1837, SUSAN STILES, born 1820 in Champaign County, Ohio, daughter of ISAAC and ELIZABETH STILES. They lived in Logan County, Ohio, for a short period of time, and in 1850 moved to Ripley Township, Huron County, Ohio, on property her father owned earlier. Nicholas lived to be 95 years old.
HENRY SMITH, his wife, CAROLINE REDFIELD*, and their children came from Onondaga County, New York, in the spring of 1840, to settle on 200 acres of land Henry had purchased while still in New York from David Ely. Their trip to their new home in Huron County was by wagon as many did. One of the three children was Jane, who died on 09 June 1840, age 8 mo. 25 days.
OTIS SMITH born in Onondaga County, New York, 1833, the son of HENRY and CAROLINE SMITH, married MARY J. WELCH. She was born in 1842 in Champaign County, Ohio, the daughter of NICHOLAS D. and SUSAN WELCH, my great-grandparents.

* Subsequent research has determined that Redfield is Caroline's surname from a previous marriage and that her maiden name is Otis.
