Edmund MEAD, my great-great-great grandfather, was born 4 April 1788, in Putnam County, New York, to Ethan and Elizabeth (KEELER) MEAD. On 2 October 1813, Edmund married Rachel KNAPP who was born on 15 February 1790, in Delaware County, New York. She was the daughter of Silas and Anna (GUION) KNAPP. Both Ethan MEAD and Silas KNAPP served in the American Revolution. Edmund's brother, Abraham, was one of the founders of Fitchville, Huron County, Ohio.
Edmund and Rachel (KNAPP) MEAD had nine children: Jane Emeline, Elizabeth Ann, Susan, Silas Knapp, Almira, Alfred Guion, Rachel, Charles Edmund, and Calvert Augustus MEAD. Edmund MEAD was a private secretary to a captain in the War of 1812. He moved his family to Huron County, Ohio, where he first bought 125 acres of land 1-1/2 miles southeast of Norwalk. In 1832, he bought a tract of land in Bronson Twp. He was a farmer. Edmund MEAD died 5 April 1876 and Rachel MEAD died 2 April 1878 and are buried in the Axe Factory (MESNARD) Cemetery in Huron County, Ohio.
Calvert Augustus MEAD, my great-great grandfather, was born 9 June 1834 on Hillburn Farm in Bronson Twp., Huron County, Ohio. He married Ellen Maria MESNARD on 24 March 1857. She was born in Ithaca, New York, on 30 April 1836, and the daughter of Eri and Harriet (BAKER) MESNARD. (See Mesnard and Baker Families.) Calvert and Ellen MEAD adopted a son, Charles, and had six children of their own: Byron Luther, Albert, Gertrude (married J. BAILEY), Clayton, Henry, and Frank MEAD. Calvert was a successful farmer and active with the Republican Party. Calvert MEAD died 27 October 1912, and Ellen on 14 December 1911, and are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio.
Byron Luther MEAD, my great grandfather, was born on 21 March 1861, in Bronson Twp., Huron County, Ohio. He married Alice PECK on 22 July 1885. She was born 12 June 1862, in Huron County, Ohio (daughter of John and Matilda Sprague Peck). They had four daughters: Lauretta, Jeanette, Bertha, and Florence. Byron and Alice divorced. Byron moved to Bristol, Elkhart County Indiana, and remarried. Alice remarried Joe PHILBIN (father of film star, Mary PHILBIN) and lived in Cook County, Illinois, and later in Sandusky, Ohio. Byron died 18 September 1934, in Bristol, Indiana. Alice died on 5 January 1942, in Sandusky, Ohio, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio.
Florence Matilda MEAD, my grandmother, was born on 12 August 1896, Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois. She married Gordon DAUGHERTY (son of Henry and Clarissa Upp Daugherty) on 2 October 1915, in Chicago, Illinois. They moved to Fostoria, Ohio, and later to Sandusky, Ohio. They had seven daughters: Hazel (m. William JACOB), Alice (m. Russell PERKIS), Ruth (m. Robert SHEPAR; Willis HENRY), Mary (m. Charles CHEEK), Frieda (m. John GARRETT), Beatrice (m. Richard DAVID) and Nancy (m. James KELLER). Gordon was an electrician. He died on 26 November 1976. Florence died on 22 February 1965. They are buried in Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron, Ohio.
Nancy Ann DAUGHERTY was born in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio, and married James Errald KELLER, born on 9 August 1920, in Hancock County, Ohio (son of Errald and Mary Elizabeth Pugh Keller) on 26 May 1956, in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio. James died on 16 April 2002, and is buried in Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron, Ohio. He was employed by Ohio Bell Telephone Company and served in World War II.
